Saturday 18th November was International AntiSweatshop Day. Activists from Manchester University Third World First and others set up a stall in Market Street asking shoppers to sign postcards to be sent to the big three sports shoe firms, Nike, Adidas and Reebok. They were joined by a shopper wearing a giant pair of trainers who loudly compared the price of her outsize footwear with the wages that the workers who made the trainers were getting paid. The stall was very popular and almost four hundred postcards were sigcned and sent off to the various companies.

Local ND groups and Manchester Campaign Against Arms Trade are putting pressure on the German and British govern ments to cancel the Eurofighter project. They agree with the former defence minister, Allan Clark, that the Eurofighter is tomorrow's prices for yesterday's technology and that "we must find a less extravagant way of paying people to make buckets with holes in them".
